Why do many anti-Christian people celebrate Christmas the traditional way which is supposedly rooted in Christian tradition? Do they not realise and care that Christmas is a mass for Christ?
anti-Christians wouldn’t be going to mass or a christian church on Christmas day. That’s bizarre.
If you mean non-christians who celebrate Christmas, then I can answer your questions. First, the traditon of a tree and even the date as well as other characteristics were all borrowed from pre-Christian pagan holiday traditions. So there is no really traditional way to celebrate Christmas other than to reject all the festivity, to refuse to put up a tree or to burn a log in the fireplace or exchange gifts. Perhaps you can just meet on some other agreed upon date and do whatever you think your religion dictates.
Me? I enjoy the season.
I love having a couple of days set aside to put up festive decorations and trim a tree (bring a touch of nature into the house during a time when the garden sleeps) and exchange gifts and break bread with my family and friends.
It’s been done for thousands and thousands of years and by many different cultures. Most traditional christmas celebrations are borrowed solstice celebrations.
Every cultures, long before the Christian era, celebrated solstice. A time when winter sets in and lives that were dependent on an agrarian society were inclined toward rituals that assured the return of the spring and fertility.
I could add a ton of links to sites that explain how the first christians set up their holidays and talk about the council of Nicea and how even the creation and flood myths which serve as foundations for the New Testament were borrowed from other prehistoric and bronze age religions. I could talk about the one little gospel written by the only guy who really lived during the time Jesus was supposed to have taught in Israel was burned by Christian mobs when they attacked the Library of Alexandria....but I have a feeling that I’m not going to be well rated by this OP. I’m not providing the kind of answer he or she is looking for. So I’ll spare myself the effort.
